Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. - - Calvinaugh Jones rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns as Concord University posted a 63-21 victory over UVa-Wise at Callaghan Stadium Saturday. The victorious Mountain Lions held the Cavaliers to -9 rushing yards in the homecoming victory as they built a 56-7 lead after three quarters.
Concord (4-2, 4-2 MEC) put the game away in the opening quarter by scoring 26 points. Just over a minute into the game, Jones broke a 62-yard touchdown run before fellow tailback Jamal Petty scored from three yards out with 10:49 to play in the opening period.
A T.J. Smith touchdown reception, a safety and an Andy Ellington 46-yard field goal completed the scoring in the first period.
Trailing by 26, things failed to improve for UVa-Wise (0-6, 0-5 MEC) in the second quarter. An errant snap led to a second safety with 14:21 to play in the half.
Carlton Griffith got the Cavs on the board late in the first half when he took a pitch and raced around the left end. The score was setup by a 39-yard completion from Jeremy Eubank to Terrence Younger.
UVa-Wise then began to get the ball back by calling timeouts on Concord's ensuing possession. The plan would backfire as the Mountain Lions would pick up first downs on the ground before Novak fired a pass downfield to Jermell Douse for 31 yards and a score. Ellington's conversion kick sent Garin Justice's team to intermission leading 35-7.
Concord continued the onslaught in the third period as a pair of touchdown runs by Jones and a 42-yard interception return for touchdown by Chaudlier Shepherd pushed the lead to 56-7 after three periods.
A Dorian Harris touchdown run and the first collegiate touchdown of the career of Camryn Little cut the lead to 56-21 before backup quarterback Justin Cogar scored for Concord with less than two minutes to go for the final margin of 63-21.
The Mountain Lions amassed 556 yards of total offense, 327 of which came on the ground.
Younger finished with six catches for 161 yards while Zachary Blair tallied 12 tackles, five for loss in defeat.
Smith caught six passes for 70 yards and Ervin Moore posted a team-high six tackles for Concord. As a team, the Mountain Lions forced four turnovers and sacked Cavalier quarterbacks six times.
UVa-Wise will welcome West Liberty University to Smith Stadium next week.
