Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. - - Host Wofford College used a 21-point first quarter and held off a third quarter rally by UVa-Wise to post a 49-15 victory at Gibbs Stadium Saturday night. The NCAA FCS Terriers ran the ball 44 times for 267 yards but, the Cavaliers limited Lorenzo Long to 14 yards. Long had entered the game as Wofford's leading rusher.
Wofford (2-2) scored first on a 44-yard touchdown run by Octavious Harden before a 43-yard pass from Evan Jacks to Bryce Moates gave the host a 14-0 lead mid-way through the first quarter. The Terriers extended the lead to 21-0 at the 5:38 mark in the opening quarter when Jaleel Green picked off a Ty Ryans pass and raced 40 yards for a score.
UVa-Wise (0-4) would eventually fall behind 28-0 before showing life in the contest. The Cavs would use a 13-play 59-yard drive that was capped by a touchdown pass from Ryans to James Cousins, the first collegiate touchdown catch of Cousins career. Carlton Griffith would scamper in for the two-point conversion to make the score 28-8.
The score would remain 28-8 until the 8:38 mark in the third quarter when Javonte Latney scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown for UVa-Wise when he finished off a six-play 79-yard drive with a five-yard score. Trent Martin added the point after to make the score 28-15.
It would be as close as UVa-Wise would get as Wofford would finish the game with 21 unanswered points in posting the 49-15 win.
Cousins finished the game with seven catches for 136 yards and teammate Terrence Younger hauled in four receptions for 73 yards for the Cavs.
Hardin led Wofford with 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Nick Colvin, Michael Weimer, and Long also added a touchdown run.
On defense, Zach Blair recorded his third consecutive strong game with eight tackles, 2.5 stops for loss, and an interception for UVa-Wise. Wofford's Michael Roach tied Blair for game-high tackle honors with eight.
UVa-Wise will return home next week for Homecoming 2014 when Notre Dame College visits Carl Smith Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
