Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Host West Liberty collected 73 total digs and took advantage of 17 UVa-Wise hitting errors en route to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-20) Mountain East Conference win on Friday. The victory was the third consecutive to start the MEC season for the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty (5-9, 3-0 MEC) jumped out to a 10-3 in the opening set and never looked back in taking a 1-0 lead. The 'Toppers posted 16 kills against just one error in the opening set while the Cavaliers committed six hitting errors in the set.
UVa-Wise (4-7, 0-3 MEC) rebounded in the second set with a 4-0 run off the serve of Veronica Sanchez. The visitors held the lead until West Liberty took the lead for good at 17-16 off an attack error. West Liberty again put up impressive kill numbers with 17 in the set as the host took a 2-0 lead.
The 'Toppers jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the final set of the night and appeared to be headed to an easy 3-0 win before the Cavaliers responded with a run. UVa-Wise would get the set as close at 22-18 before back-to-back points by West Liberty put the match out of reach before eventually posting the 25-20 victory.
Karley Allen was the only Cavalier to record double digit kills as she finished with 10. Brittni Altmann added a team-high 18 digs in defeat.
West Liberty was led by the27 dig performance from by Courtney Pyeritz and 13 kill night from Alexis Boyd.
UVa-Wise will be back in action on Tuesday night at the Prior Center against Concord University.
