UVa-Wise is 12-11 all-time in openers. The Cavaliers have opened the season on the road 14 times and are 7-7 in those contests.
The Cavaliers will be looking to snap a six game road losing streak after going winless away from Carl Smith Stadium in 2013. The team's last road win came in 2012 at Union College when UVa-Wise posted a 14-10 victory.
47 freshman comprise the 81 players on this year's roster. Of the 47 freshman, 37 are true freshman.
Saturday's game will be the first of 10 day games played by the Cavaliers this season. UVa-Wise's lone night game will take place on the road at Wofford College on Sept. 27th.
Eight starters on defense and seven on offense return from the 2013 squad. Four of the returning starters on offense are offensive lineman Jose Urrutia, Kevin Enix, Dustin McGill, and Kenny Breckley.
UVa-Wise lost both its placekicker and punter from 2013. Marshall University transfer Trent Martin will be tasked with the duty of replacing Paul Melshen and Tyler Graham as he will handle both placekicking and punting duties.
Welcome back. After missing significant time due to injury in 2013, senior outside linebacker Jeremiah Cooke, senior tailback Andre Dickerson, and redshirt freshman Michael Tarrer are all back healthy for 2014.
