Box Score WISE - - UVa-Wise won its second consecutive home match on Tuesday with a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Salem International at the Prior Center. The Cavaliers' Karley Allen led all players with 26 kills and added 17 digs while teammate Lindsey Tucker hammered home 12 kills in only 26 attacks.
UVa-Wise (3-4) jumped out to a 7-3 in the opening set and never trailed en route to gaining a 1-0 lead. Allen delivered six of her kills in the set and Veronica Sanchez, six, and Ashley Hooven, five, combined for 11 assists.
Salem International (0-6) used a 9-3 run in the second set to take a 17-15. The Tigers would not trail again in the set despite the Cavaliers forcing a 19-19 tie late. The final point of the set would come from Rachel Hess off a Gitana Cafasso assist.
The two schools would trade the lead for the first half of the third set before UVa-Wise finished on a 15-9 run in taking a 2-1 lead. Allen, seven, and Tucker four, combined for 11 kills in the set while Sanchez dished out nine assists.
Salem International appeared to be on the cusp of forcing a fifth set late in the fourth set as the visitors held a 21-17 lead following a Hess kill. Coach Kristen Salyer then called timeout and her team responded with an 8-2 run to win the match. In the run, Allen delivered four kills before a Santana Bishop kill finished off the match.
Brittney Nesbitt led the Tigers with 27 assists while Hess produced a team-high 15 kills.
Sanchez led all players with 35 assists and Hooven added 22 as the Cavaliers tallied 61 assists in the win. Brittni Altmann collected a team-high 23 digs as Erin Lee added 12 digs to join Allen as a trio of Cavs to finish with double-digit digs.
The match was the final non-conference match prior to the start of conference play. UVa-Wise will travel to Shepherd on Friday for a MEC match against the Rams.
