LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its 2014 NFCA Division II All-Region teams and two UVa-Wise Cavaliers were honored by the association. Sophomore Christina Ziemba earned First-Team Atlantic Region honors while freshman Taylor Brandts was a Second-Team Atlantic Region selection.
Ziemba hit .413 and lined a school record 74 hits while fielding at a .980 clip from her centerfield position. The Chesapeake, Virginia native was a perfect 13-13 in stolen base attempts and scored 48 runs as she played and started in all 51 games played by the Cavs in 2014. The award is the second for Ziemba who was also a First-Team All-MEC selection.
Brandts won a school record 22 games and posted a 2.28 ERA in a season that saw her earn MEC Pitcher of the Year in addition to her Second-Team Atlantic Region honor. The King George, Virginia product struck out 141 hitters in her 158.1 innings pitched. She capped her freshman campaign with a MEC Tournament MVP honor as she posted a 3-0 record in the event.
UVa-Wise finished the 2014 season 37-14 and champions of the MEC Tournament. Ziemba and Brandts will join three other Cavs as returning starters in 2015.
