CHARLOTTE, N.C. - - UVa-Wise scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a 4-2 game en route to an 8-3 win in game one before Queens scored five runs in its final trip to the plate to post an 8-5 victory in game two of the doubleheader. Prior to the game two loss, the Cavaliers were on a five-game winning streak that included a pair of doubleheader sweeps.
UVa-Wise (9-4) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning of the day's first game as Alexa Hernadez lined a two-RBI hit as part of a four run frame.
Queens (11-9) responded with two runs in its half of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2 on run scoring hits by Kaitlyn Cheek and Amanda Meade.
The score would remain 4-2 until the Cavs broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with four runs. In the inning, Kristina Romualdo, Mindy Combs, Taylor Brandts, and Sarah Wiltshire all produced RBI hits.
Rachel Hawks earned the victory in the circle for UVa-Wise as she scattered five hits in five innings of work, allowing two runs , one of which was earned. The win improved Hawks record to 4-1 and Brandts earned her first collegiate save with two innings of one run ball.
Game two saw Queens take advantage of six UVa-Wise errors, three of which took place in a five run sixth inning that proved to be the difference.
In the loss, the Cavs lined seven hits, two off the bat of catcher Rachel Fischer. Combs finished the game 1-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs while Romualdo, Megan Dillion, and Sarah Beamer added an RBI in the contest.
UVa-Wise is back in action on Thursday when the team plays a doubleheader at Johnson C. Smith.
