Box Score
HARROGATE, Tenn. - - Lincoln Memorial University used a three-run eighth inning to break open a two-run game en route to an 11-6 victory over UVa-Wise at Lamar Hennon Field on Tuesday. The Railsplitters scored in six innings as the host totaled 13 hits in the non-conference win.
Lincoln Memorial (3-4) would use four hits and a balk to take a 1-0 lead in the home half the first inning before building the lead to 5-0 with a four-run third inning.
UVa-Wise (0-1) would climb back into the contest as Tye Marshall and Jordan Olinger each lined RBI singles in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Following a single run by the Railsplitters in the fifth, the Cavaliers would score two more runs in the visiting half of the inning on a two-RBI hit by Austin Johnson to make the score 6-4.
The two run deficit would be as close as Hank Banner's club would get over the remainder of the game as Lincoln Memorial would score three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to score the 11-6 win.
Mike McCollum paced an eight-hit UVa-Wise attack with a 3-5 day at the plate and two runs scored.
Brandon Jean earned the mound victory by tossing five innings of two-run ball. Jean fanned two, walked two and scattered five hits to improve to 1-0 on the year.
Caleb Daniels suffered the loss a UVa-Wise club that sent six different hurlers to the mound in the school's season opener. Daniels allowed one run in his two innings of work while also recording his first strikeout in a Cavalier uniform. Jared Finch was the only Cavalier not to allow a run on the mound as he allowed one base runner in the only frame he tossed.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to be back in action tomorrow at Carson-Newman College. First pitch is set for 2 pm from Jefferson City, Tenn.
