Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - An 8-0 run mid-way through the second half would be enough for Millersville University as the host Maruders scored a 69-65 win over UVa-Wise in the Atlantic Region Challenge Saturday afternoon. Millersville's Carly Gallagher led all players with 27 points on 9-17 shooting. Gallagher would make a foul shot with 10 seconds to play to extend her teams advantage to four, ending any chance UVa-Wise had of a comeback.
UVa-Wise (0-1) opened the game on a 7-0 run as Katie Jo Dockery hit a pair of 3-pointers. The lead was short lived for the Cavaliers as Millersville responded with a 10-2 run to take a 10-9 lead with just over 14 minutes to play in the opening half.
Millersville (1-0) would eventually take a 26-25 lead at intermission as the two schools traded the lead changed hands seven times in the first 20 minutes. Gallagher scored eight of her 27 points in the opening half while Dockery and Harding each netted eight points for UVa-Wise.
The two schools would swap the lead six times in the first seven and half minutes of the second half before Millersville's 8-0 run put the hosts in front 51-42 with 9:30 remaining.
UVa-Wise would spend the remainder of the game battling back, cutting the lead to as little as three points with 13 seconds to play, following a Dockery 3-pointer.
Gallagher would make one of two free throws, however, ending any hope of a uVa-Wise comeback.
Millersville enjoyed a large advantage in the post as they out-rebounded UVa-Wise 40-31 and while enjoying a 40-22 scoring advantage in the paint.
Yasmin Cooper, 11 points, was the only other Millersville player to score in double figures. Alexis Martin finished one point shy of a double-double in the win as she grabbed a game-high 11 boards to go with her nine points.
Carey and Taylor Sandidge added 10 points each in the loss for UVa-Wise. The Cavs forced 21 turnovers and scored 23 points off the miscues to stay in the contest.
UVa-Wise will face nationally ranked Edinboro University tomorrow at 1 pm.
