Box Score WISE - - Number 15 Concord University scored 10 points in the final nine minutes to post a 30-13 Mountain East Conference victory over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium on Saturday. Coach Garin Justice's Mountain Lions rushed for 205 yards in the victory, led by Jamal Petty who gained 125 yards on 24 carries.
Concord (9-0, 8-0 MEC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 10:37 to go in the opening quarter when Ben Nester scooped up a blocked punt and raced into the end zone. Andy Ellington added the extra point to give the visitors a 7-0 advantage.
Special teams also saw the second score of the day when a botched punt snap by the Mountain Lions gave UVa-Wise (1-8, 1-7 MEC) a safety as the snap sailed out of the end zone.
Concord would take a 13-2 lead to intermission as Brian Novak hooked up with Tiko Henderson on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The drive started at the UVa-Wise 15 following a Jeremy Douse 61-yard punt return.
The Cavs would cut the lead to one score when Trent Martin booted a 28-yard field goal to cap a five-play 51-yard drive. Â Â The momentum would be short lived as Nester would score his second touchdown of the game, a three-yard touchdown scamper with 6:15 to play in the third quarter. Ellington added the extra point to give the Mountain Lions a 20-5 lead.
The score would remain 20-5 until 8:50 to play when Jeremy Eubank and Terrence Younger hooked up on a 45-yard touchdown play. The pass was deflected numerous times by Younger and Concord defenders before Younger finally hauled in the big touchdown reception. Eubank found senior wide receiver Gil Lusk for the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to seven at 20-13.
UVa-Wise would then attempt an onside kick to try and get the ball back. Martin kicked the ball and watched it roll before recovering it for the Cavs. However, the officials ruled the ball had not yet traveled the required 10 yards, giving the ball to the Mountain Lions.
Concord would take advantage of the good field position as Ellington would kick a 22-yard field goal to put the game out of reach with 5:51 to play.
The Mountain Lions added a final score late in the game when Nester scored from eight yards out for his third score of the game; Ellington's final point after led to the final margin of 30-13.
Carlton Griffith rushed for 108 yards in the loss while Ty Ryans gained 35 yards in two quarters of work. Zack Blair finished with nine stops, two behind the line of scrimmage to lead UVa-Wise while Concord's Nick Ortiz led all players with 10 stops.
