Saturday's game will feature two teams going on entirely different paths. Shepherd enters the game undefeated having defeated its opponent by an average of 34.8 points a game. The Rams enter ranked ninth in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll and have never lost a Mountain East Conference game. Known for its defense, Shepherd has lived up to its billing through the first half of 2014. In five games, opponents have scored just 42 points for an 8.4 points per game average. The two schools share three common opponents, Shepherd defeated those opponents by an average of 31 points while UVa-Wise was defeated by the opponents by an average of 14.3 points per contest.
