Box Score WISE - - Glenville State jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead and never trailed en route to a 35-9 Mountain East Conference win over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium on Saturday. The game opened with Brayden Altmann serving as an honorary captain, a young man with close ties to the College who was recently injured.
Glenville State's (3-4, 3-4 MEC) Rahmann Lee got the scoring started with a one-yard touchdown run to finish off a 13-play 54-yard drive. Tanner Wright booted the extra point to give the Pioneers a 7-0 advantage.
Lee scored his second touchdown of the game with 5:50 to play in the first quarter when quarterback Sean Steele found the tailback for an 84-yard touchdown completion. Wright connected on his second point after of the game to put the visitors in front 14-0.
Steele's second touchdown pass of the game, this time to Billy Perkins, put Glenville State up three scores at 10:36 to go in the opening half.
Trailing 21-0, freshman Von Purvis scored the only touchdown of the game for the Cavaliers (0-7, 0-6 MEC) as he finished off a nine-play 25-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown scamper. The drive was setup by a muffed punt by the Pioneers. Trent Martin's extra point cut the Glenville State lead to 14 at 21-7.
Steele fired his third touchdown pass of the first half with less than a minute to go when he hooked up with Dante Absher on a five-yard score. Wright added the point after to send the game to intermission with the Pioneers in front 28-7.
The score remained 28-7 until 5:14 to go in the third quarter when UVa-Wise blocked a Glenville State punt in the end zone for a safety. It would be the final two points the Cavs would score.
Steele fired his fourth touchdown pass of the game in the fourth quarter when he found Ralph Gordon for a 23-yard scoring strike with 11:10 to go. Wright's point after was good, leaving the final margin of 35-9.
UVa-Wise will be on the road next week to face West Virginia Stae. A year ago, the Cavs defeated the Yellow Jackets for the school's first ever MEC victory. Kickoff in Institute, West Virginia is set for 2 pm next Saturday.
