Box Score RICHMOND, Va. - - UVa-Wise improved its record to 9-9 on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-5, 25-18, 25-25-19) road victory over Virginia Union. The Cavaliers posted an impressive .349 hitting percentage in the match as the visitors tallied 36 kills against just seven errors in completing the season sweep over the Panthers.
Coach Kristen Salyer's team used an 11-0 run in the first set to open a 17-2 lead en route to an easy 25-5 win. Veronica Sanchez handed out nine of her match-high 18 assists in the set while Karley Allen, Erin Anderson, and Brittni Altmann each had a service ace.
A second big run by UVa-Wise proved to be the difference in the second set. Trailing 7-6, the Cavs would go on a 7-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. The advantage would be too much for the Panthers to overcome as the hosts would get no closer than two points the remainder of the set.
UVa-Wise completed the sweep in the third set by withstanding the strongest challenge from Virginia Union of the night. The two sides were tied at 15 and the Cavs led by just one at 18-17 before three consecutive service aces by Santana Bishop would give her team an insurmountable lead.
Lindsey Tucker posted a team-high eight kills for UVa-Wise and Allen added seven kills and a match-high 14 digs. Ashley Hooven joined Sanchez with double-digit assists with 12 while Maicee Allen turned in a perfect hitting night with five kills and no errors.
Esha Atkins led Virginia Union with 15 assists and Ellie Parson posted 10 digs in defeat.
The Cavs will return to Mountain East Conference action this Friday when West Virginia State visits the Prior Center. First serve is set for 7 pm.
