Prior to the victory, the Pioneers had lost four of their first five games to start the season. Glenville State ranks second in the Mountain East Conference in rushing at 214.5 rushing yards per game and first in average yards per carry at 5.2. Despite their success on the ground, the Pioneers turned to the air attack in the win over the Golden Eagles. Quarterback Sean Steele connected on 22 of 39 pass attempts for 323 yards and two touchdown passes in the victory. Coach David Hutchinson's club was picked to finish fourth in the MEC by a preseason poll voted on by the league's coaches.

Zack Blair continues to have one of the more impressive seasons by a Cavalier in recent history. Through six games, Blair has posted 52 tackles to rank fourth in the MEC. His 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage lead the conference while his 31 solo tackles rank fourth in the league. The Cavaliers are looking to find more consistency on the offensive side of the ball after scoring 25 points in the last three games. The team may have an opportunity to break out of its recent funk Saturday as Glenville State ranks ninth in the league in scoring defense. Thus far, opponents are averaging 36.2 points per game against the Pioneers. The primary culprit of Glenville State's defense has been the inability to stop the pass. The Pioneers rank last in the MEC in pass defense, allowing 296.3 yards per game. Through the air, UVa-Wise is averaging 169 yards per game on offense.
