WISE - - Saturday's contest will be Homecoming 2013 as UVa-Wise takes on longtime foe Union College as both teams look to claim their first victory of the 2013 season.
   Â
The Bulldogs and Cavaliers spent the last 11 seasons as members of the Mid-South Conference, which means today's meeting will be the first non-conference game between the two schools since the 1993 meeting. Overall, Union holds a 8-5 lead in the series but, UVa-Wise has scored back-to-back wins in the series, including a 14-10 win a year ago. In that contest, the Cavs limited the Bulldogs to just 126 passing yards and forced two fumbles en route to the lowest point total allowed in 2012.
Thus far in 2013, Union has relied on its running game. As a team, the Bulldogs have gained 678 yards in the first three games of the season. Leonard Dixon has been the focal point of the rushing attack. The junior from Lake City, Fla. is averaging 5.6 yards a rush and has totaled 358 yards and two touchdowns. Like UVa-Wise, Union has used three quarterbacks this season. As a team, the Bulldogs have thrown for 425 yards and three touchdowns. Chandler Whittlesey has received the most snaps under center and has completed 16 of 35 pass attempts for 264 yards, three touchdowns, and three
interceptions.
   Â
UVa-Wise enters the game in search of offensive production. The Cavs have scored just two touchdowns in the past two games. A week ago, the bulk of the offense came from the foot of senior kicker
Paul Melshen. Melshen was a perfect 3-3 on field goal attempts in the 38-15 loss to Charleston. On the ground, fellow senior
Andre Dickerson posted a team-high 57 yards on 10 carries. On defense, senior
Thomas Wright led all players with nine stops in the game.
