King Outlasts UVa-Wise to Win in Five Sets

Box Score WISE - - King University overcame a 1-0 deficit and held on late to post a 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 15-11) volleyball victory over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center on Wednesday.  

The Tornado dropped the first set 25-23 before rallying to win back-to-back sets by the scores of 25-21 and 25-16.  King appeared to be on the cusp of ending the match in the fourth set only to see UVa-Wise score a 27-25 victory to force a fifth and decisive set.  The Cavaliers again fell behind as the visitors built an 8-1 lead.  The Tornado again had difficulty holding the advantage as the Cavs rallied back to cut the deficit to 10-8 only to see the match slip away as the Tornado scored five of the games next eight points to win the set and the match.

In the loss, Karley Allen posted 22 kills and 24 digs while Veronica Sanchez handed out 51 assists and 10 digs.  The duo of Santana Bishop (16) and Kelsey Smith (12) added 28 kills and Brittni Altmann 10 digs for the Cavs.  King was led by the duo of Summer Kremer and Maribeth Kern who each collected 14 kills.  Payton Tipton finished with a team-high 23 digs while Kern (16) and Brooke Calhoun (12) also had double digit dig totals.

UVa-Wise will take a week off before playing on Wednesday at home against Bluefield College.  The match is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
