Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - West Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of six UVa-Wise turnovers and scored 30 unanswered points en route to a 37-7 victory in the school's home opener on Saturday.
UVa-Wise (0-2) scored its lone touchdown of the day on the first play of the second quarter when
Marcus Smith raced around left end.
Paul Melshen added the extra point to tie the game. Smith finished the game with 30 rushing yards on 10 attempts. From that point, it would be all Bobcats (1-1) as the host picked off six passes from the quarterback trio of
Jeremy Eubank,
Ty Ryans, and
Cullen LaVoi.
On the day, senior wide receiver
James Long caught 11 passes for 160 yards and
Terrence Younger added six catches for 74 yards in the loss. Wesleyan held UVa-Wise to 39 rushing yards on 29 attempts. In the air, Ryans completed 10 of 25 attempts for 173 yards with an interception. As a team, the Cavs completed 20-46 pass attempts for 273 yards.
UVa-Wise returns to play on Saturday when it hosts the University of Charleston for its home opener. Kickoff is set for 2 pm inside Carl Smith Stadium.
