Box Score WISE - - Visiting West Virginia State University completed a season sweep of UVa-Wise by claiming a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center on Saturday morning. The Yellow Jackets Erica Bickham led all players with 13 kills in the match while the duo of Naomi Burke (19) and Madisen Mangus (16) combined to hand out 35 assists in the win.
West Virginia State (10-14, 6-8 MEC) broke a 6-6 tie in the first set with a 14-8 run en route to the opening set win. The Yellow Jackets finished the set with a .355 hitting percentage in the set while the Cavaliers (7-19, 2-12 MEC) finished the set with 11 kills and seven errors.
UVa-Wise jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the second set but West Virginia State quickly responded by winning four consecutive points to take a 10-6 advantage. Moments later, the Yellow Jackets would go on a 6-1 run to put the set out of reach.
The third set again saw the Cavaliers take a lead mid-way through the set as the host built a 14-12 advantage. Again, the Yellow Jackets would go on a long scoring run to claim the set, this time a 13-2 run to win the set 25-16 and claim the match.
UVa-Wise was led by
Brittni Altmann's 15 digs and
Veronica Sanchez's 22 assists.
Santana Bishop added a match-high four block assists while Karley added had a team-high 10 kills.
The match was the home finale for the Cavaliers who will finish the regular season next week with back-to-back road matches at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Glenville State College. UVa-Wise travels to Wesleyan on Friday for a 7 pm start.
