Katie Jo Lester 10 also scored in double figures for the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise (1-0) opened the game on a 13-3 run as the freshman duo of Sandidge and Carey scored seven of the team's first 13 points. Ohio Valley (0-1) quickly answered and built a six point lead by intermission by forcing 12 turnovers and out rebounding the visitors 21-15 in the half.
In the second half, it was the Cavalier defense that shined as the Fighting Scots hit just six of 40 shots from the field. UVa-Wise's defense was even better on the perimeter as Ohio Valley failed to connect on a three-point attempt (0-20) in the second half. As a team, the Cavaliers also did a good job of getting to the line and capitalizing on the opportunities by making 18 of 23 free throws.
Sandidge added five rebounds, two assists, and a steal to go with her game-high 17 points while Cluesman finished one rebound shy of a double-double while also handing out three assists. The trio of Sandidge, Cluesman, and Carey combined to go 27-34 from the free throw line and as a team UVa-Wise shot 73.2 percent (30-41)
Ohio Valley was led by Kelly Way who scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kayla Parsley tied Cluesman for game-high rebound honors with nine and Josey Hull led all players with four assists.
For the game, the Scots made just 18 of 73 attempts (24.7 percent) and shot three percent from the three-point line (1-30).
UVa-Wise will return to action on Tuesday when the team travels to Virginia-Lynchburg for a 6 pm start.
