Long Sets Receiving Record but Cavs Fall

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – It was a record setting day at Callaghan Stadium home of the Concord Mountain Lions (7-2, 6-1 MEC). A bright spot in what was a disappointing game for the Cavaliers (1-8, 1-6 MEC) is the fact that senior wide receiver James Long broke the all-time single season reception yardage record with nine catches and 76 yards in the 44-6 loss. For the season Long now has  1,119 receiving yards. On the other sideline kicker Andy Ellington tied his own career long field goal record by kicking 48-yarder with 1:34 left in the third quarter.

After a back and forth special team battle that saw two punts from each team and a blocked field goal by Concord, the Mountain Lions ended the scoreless first quarter with a 21-yard field goal to go up 3-0 with 2:52 to play.

Concord would then go up 10-0 on a three-yard touchdown run by tailback Calvinaugh Jones. Ellington's PAT would cap a six-play, 72-yard drive for the Mountain Lions. One minute and 38 seconds later Concord would put three more on the board with a 46-yard field goal from Ellington making the score 13-0 in Concord's favor.

The Mountain Lions would then take eight plays and travel 60 yards on a drive that finished on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Brian Novack to Darrick Williams. The PAT by Ellington would extend the lead to 20-0.

The Cavaliers would then go three and out leading to another Jones score from one yard out making it 27-0.
Concord would add 17 more points to go up 44-0 effectively putting the game out of reach.

It would be until the middle of the fourth quarter until the Cavaliers would put points on the board on a 11 yard pass from Cullen LaVoi to Terrance Younger.  A botched PAT would leave the Cavaliers with only six points in the game.

On defense, Marcus Jones and Timmy Meador both led the Cavs with 9 tackles apiece. The defense could not hold Jones as he scorched them for 115 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.

The Cavaliers will return to action next Saturday Nov. 9th at 1:00pm against West Liberty at home. You can listen to the game on 93.5 WAXM or watch it live online at www.uvawisecavs.com/showcase
