Pioneers 49 Cavaliers 7

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Host Glenville State limited UVa-Wise to eight rushing yards and scored 49 points in the game's first three quarters en route to a 49-7 win at Morris Field on Saturday.

The Pioneers (3-4, 3-3 MEC) rushed the ball 48 times for 271 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.  Rahmann Lee led all rushers with 173 yards on 17 carries, included a 52-yard scoring scamper.  On defense, Glenville State produced four sacks and limited the Cavaliers (0-7, 0-5) to 258 yards of total offense.

The Pioneers started the game on a 21 point scoring surge which started before the team ran an offense play.  With just under 10 minutes to play in the opening quarter, UVa-Wise sent Paul Melshen to the field to attempt a 48-yard field goal.  The attempt would never pass the line of scrimmage as Glenville State blocked the kick and Darren Elliott recovered the block and raced 66-yards for the score.  Josh Brown's kick made the score 7-0.

With 12:43 to go in the first half, the Pioneers again found the end zone, this time on a 33-yard scoring strike from Sean Steele to Delvon Purvis.  Brown would again add the point after to give Glenville State a 14-0 lead.  Later in the quarter, Lee would score the first of his two touchdowns on the day when he finished off a six-play, 79-yard scoring drive with a 15-yard touchdown run.  The point after by Brown gave the Pioneers a three-touchdown margin.

UVa-Wise would score its lone touchdown of the day when Jeremy Eubank hooked up with James Long on a five-yard touchdown pass on fourth and goal.  Melshen added the point after to cut the lead to 21-7 with 1:29 to play in the half.  The momentum for the Cavs was short lived as the Pioneers scored three players later on a 52-yard touchdown rush by Lee, the subsequent kick sent the teams into intermission with the score 28-7 Glenville State.

The third quarter belonged to the Pioneers as Steele fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to DeShaun Sands and backup quarterback Steffen Colon hit Jake Harper for a 21-yard strike.  Glenville State added a rushing touchdown by Emmanuel Smith along with three more extra points from Brown to take a 49-7 lead to the fourth quarter.

With the large advantage, Glenville State was content to run out the clock in the final period and UVa-Wise was unable to dent the scoreboard leaving the final margin of 49-7.

Long caught 11 passes for 144 yards to move within 136 yards of tying the single-season receiving record of 1,058 yards currently held by former UVa-Wise All-American Jason Lovett.  Eubank completed 23 of 41 passes attempts for 250 yards and Marcus Jones led all players with 7.5 tackles in the loss.

Harper finished the game with three catches for 61 yards and the touchdown while Glenville State completed 15 of 20 pass attempts as a team.  Colon was a perfect 5-5 for 86 yards and a score in relief of Steele.
The Cavaliers will return to play next Saturday when the team hosts West Virginia State for a 1 pm kickoff at Smith Stadium.
