Bill Porter joined the staff in early 2024 as the Sports Information Director.
He has decades of experience in the field and has been a familiar face around the UVA Wise campus since 2015 as he has assisted the department doing stats for volleyball, softball, lacrosse and basketball when there was a need and his schedule allowed for it.
Before joining the staff full time he spent the last several seasons as a statistic inputter and caller for the Scorer's Table in addition to working other jobs outside of athletics.
"We are delighted to welcome Bill to the UVA Wise family," remarked Director of Athletics Kendall Rainey. "He has extensive statistician experience, values the historical aspects of sports information, and is familiar with the South Atlantic Conference and UVA Wise."
Porter holds a bachelor's degree in communication arts with a minor in history from Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in Harrogate, Tennessee, where he served as Assistant Sports Information Director and Director of Athletic Statistics and Publications for 20 years and aided the department as a freelance statistician and a graduate assistant before that..
Throughout his career, Porter has served as official scorer/statistician for all sports sponsored by LMU as well as NCAA Tournaments for basketball, soccer, and softball, SAC Championships for basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball and Gulf South Conference Championships for basketball and softball. He has experience in athletic website design, creating media guides and publications, developing archives, and vetting nominees for awards such as hall of fame.
One weird quirk of fate from his time at LMU as both a student and employee is that he has seen or worked several significant games in Highland Cavalier history. He attended the first win by the newly-restarted volleyball team when they picked up their first win in the modern era in a win at LMU in 1992 and also was the statistician for the first meeting between UVA Wise and LMU in lacrosse in 2015, which was the first win by the Cavs in their program's history.
Porter will manage the compilation and maintenance of statistics, uvawisecavs.com - the official website of the Highland Cavaliers, historical archives, contest recaps and athletic press releases as well as assist the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.. He is an intense researcher who will also work to identify and publish stories for special topics and support UVA Wise Athletics in connecting with alumni.
Since taking over he has added numerous historical rosters to the athletics website and has put up entire schedules and/or results (where available) for football, lacrosse, volleyball, softball, and women's basketball, with men's basketball and baseball being works in progress.
A native of Knoxville with family ties to the Southwest Virginia/Upper East Tennessee region, Porter currently resides in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.
