Sowers joined the golf staff in summer 2023 and was accepted into the Graduate School of Education. Under Sowers, the UVA Wise Men’s and Women’s Golf teams have recorded numerous school records, and the seasons coached or played by Sowers are the best 4-player average seasons in school history.
Originally from Bassett, Virginia, Sowers joined the Men’s Golf team in 2019, and after graduating with distinction in 2022, he taught Government and Political Science. Sowers also received the Beulah M. Johnson Secondary Teaching Award in 2022.
Since graduating from the Master of Education program in 2024, Sowers has worked in Trio Student Support Services as an Academic Coordinator/Coach, helping students succeed academically. He works with students and athletes on time management, note-taking, literacy, test-taking, and memory and retention.
Sowers is currently working on his dissertation, exploring how rural Central Appalachian high school graduates perceived their dual enrollment experiences in relation to rural identity, the construction of a college-going identity, and preparation for college-level academic work.
Outside of golf, Sowers enjoys reading comics and books, building LEGOs, and spending time with his fiancé, Olivia.
