Bio
Patrick Shelley is back for his second year with the Cavaliers after being named to the 2022-23 SAC All-Freshman Team a season ago. As a 6-foot 4-inch, 195-pound guard, Shelley's hustle and physicality allow him to hang with the best forwards in conference as well. Shelley can do a little bit of everything for UVA Wise. He's the second-best returning rebounder for the Cavs averaging 4.4 RPG last year. He's arguably Mellinger's best defender after leading the team in steals at 45 (1.5 SPG) and ranking 6th in the conference on defense, while also finishing second on the team in blocks last year with 16. From 12/17/22 - 1/25/23, Shelley recorded at least 1 steal in 9 straight games, and averaged 2.3 steals per contest. He gets it done on offense as well, scoring in double figures 9 times last year for the Cavs, which included a late-season run that saw Shelley reach 10+ points in four consecutive games (14.5 PPG) while also rebounding at a 7.8 RPG clip.
It's no surprise that Shelley serves as the "do everything man" for UVA Wise after looking at his impressive high school career. At Darlington School in Rome, Ga. Shelley excelled in basketball, football, and track & field. In 2019, he was named to the All-Area First Team in both football and basketball for the Tigers. In that 2019 football season, Shelley led the area in receptions as a wideout, before transitioning to play quarterback. He even had an offer to play football for the University of Georgia Bulldogs and offers from other high-major Division I universities. Instead, Shelley joined the Cavaliers as a two-sport athlete in basketball and track & field.
In just one collegiate year, Shelley has also proven he can excel in the classroom as well, being named to the Dean's List for the 2022-23 school year.
His favorite thing to do outside of basketball is cook.
He is the son to his mother, Deann, and his father, James. Athleticism runs in the family too as Shelley's sister, Sierra Matthews is on the volleyball and swim teams at Life University in Marietta, Ga.
