Bio
Brad Halvorsen is geared up for his third season with the Cavaliers this year, after transferring from Western Carolina University the year prior. Halvorsen only played in 10 games for the Catamounts in his first two seasons. As a freshman, he had a reserve role off the bench only playing in 5 games and scoring two points. As a sophomore, Halvorsen was expected to see a jump in playing time but suffered an injury and missed most of the season. Halvorsen originally joined Western Carolina to play with his older brother, Matt, who was two years ahead of him with the program. The two graduated from Christ School in Kingsport, Tenn. and became the third pair of brothers to play Division I athletics joining Chavis and Travis Holmes (VMI) and the notable Mason, Miles, and Marshall Plumlee who played basketball at Duke.
Halvorsen didn't always have plans to play collegiate basketball. In fact, when it came time to make his college decision, he did not have much interest from college programs, despite being named to the All-Conference Team in 2019, and ultimately decided to give up the game of basketball. Halvorsen enrolled at the University of Tennessee as a freshman. It wasn't long after his enrollment that he realized how much he missed the game of basketball. So, Halvorsen decided to transfer to Western Carolina and play with his brother Matt. The decision re-energized Halvorsen's love of the game.
Since then, it's been a difficult road with a few injuries for Brad, but he chose to join the Cavaliers because he "believed in what the coaches were building, loved the gym, and it's close to home."
Halvorsen stems from a long lineage of athletic prowess in his family. His father, Mark, played college baseball at Rider University. His brother, Todd, played collegiately at the University of Tennessee before transferring to East Tennessee State University. While his aforementioned brother, Matt, scored 1,000 career points for the Catamounts at Western Carolina and currently holds the record for made 3-pointers in a career with 297. Halvorsen also has a cousin, Brian Roberts, who played in the MLB with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees from 2001-2014, leading the league in doubles in 2009 and twice being named an All-Star with Baltimore in 2005 and 2007. Halvorsen's mother is Laurie and he has a sister named Katie.
