WHAT IS THE FAR?

As defined by the NCAA, the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) serves as a "liaison with the athletics department, advocating for student-athletes, assisting with institutional control, and communicating the benefits of intercollegiate athletics with internal and external audiences."

As stated in the UVa-Wise Athletic Department Handbook, the primary charge of the FAR is to represent the institution and its faculty in the institutions relationship with athletics and to promote an atmosphere of compliance.
 
FAR Principal Regular Duties:
 

• Assist the Athletic Department in interpreting applicable policies and procedures.
• Certify the academic eligibility of student-athletes.
• Represent the College at appropriate meetings.
• Advise and assist the Chancellor and Director of Athletics on any aspect of intercollegiate athletics.

   Thomas M. Costa, Chair of the Department of History and Philosophy at UVa-Wise serves as the FAR.
