SAAC Constitution

UVa-Wise Student-Athlete Advisory Council Constitution 2017-2018

Article I. Name of Organization
The name of the organization shall be Student-Athlete Advisory Council (hereafter referred to as SAAC).

Article II. Purpose
The purpose of the SAAC is to provide a voice for student-athletes in order to enhance the overall student-athlete experience. Specifically, the responsibilities of the SAAC include:
  • Create a line of communication with athletic administration
  • Disseminate information to student-athletes
  • Gain input from student-athletes regarding UVa-Wise, conference, and national athletic policies and concerns
  • Solicit student-athletes responses to proposed legislation
  • Sponsor outreach activities for the local and campus communities

  • Article III. Membership
    Section A: Eligibility for Membership
  • SAAC members must be student-athletes who are eligible for competition in intercollegiate athletics and in good academic standing at UVa-Wise
  • There will be two student-athlete representatives from each team (one underclassmen and one upperclassmen) per academic year
  • Each member is entitled to one voteSection B: Method of Selection
  • Each team's Head Coach, SAAC Advisor, and current SAAC members will select members of the SAAC.
  • No eligible UVa-Wise student-athlete may be denied membership on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, marital status, familial status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, political beliefs, reprisal, or because all or part of an individual's income is derived from any public assistance program. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information should contact the ADA office in Zehmer (www.uvawise.edu/ada).Section C: Attendance Policies
  • Attendance at all SAAC meetings is required unless excused due to team competition, team practice, or class. In the case of an excused absence, representatives must notify the SAAC advisor and President.
  • SAAC representatives are allowed one unexcused absence per year. Any subsequent unexcused absence will result in dismissal from SAAC.
  • Representatives are allowed and encouraged to find a substitute from their team Article IV. Structure
  • Section A: Executive Board
  • The SAAC shall have an Executive Board that includes a President, Vice President, Secretary, Conference SAAC Representative, and Advisor.
  • All officers must be active members of the SAAC.
  • Officers shall serve a term of one year (August to July). It is permissible for an individual to be voted to an office for more than one term.Section B: Duties of the Executive Board
  • President
    i. Presides over all SAAC meetings
    ii. Serves as the spokesperson of the SAACiii. Shall appoint committee chairpersons
  • iv. Shall be in contact with advisor about programming and SAAC events
  • Vice President
    i. Will perform the functions of the office of the Chairperson in their absence
  • Secretary/Treasurer
    i. Will take meeting minutes
    ii. Will handle any funds generated by the SAAC
  • Conference Representativei. Will be the UVa-Wise representative to conference and national SAAC organizations
  • Advisor
    i. Work with officers in conducting the business of the SAAC
    ii. Serve as liaison between the SAAC and the Athletics DepartmentSection C: Nominations and Voting
  • Nominations will be solicited for President. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Chairperson of the SAAC.
  • Nominations will be solicited for Vice President. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Vice President of the SAAC.
  • Nominations will be solicited for Secretary. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Secretary/Treasurer of the SAAC.
  • Nominations will be solicited for Conference Representative. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Conference Representative for the SAAC.
  • Each representative will vote for officers of the SAAC which will occur at the last meeting of the regular academic year.
  • Article V. Meetings
    Section A: The times for regularly scheduled meetings shall be once a month for all members which will be determined at the previous meeting.
    Section B: Executive Board must attend the regular meeting once a month and will also have an Executive Board meeting once a month. They will set the agenda for the monthly meetings.
    Section C: Special or emergency meetings may be called with less than 24 hour notice by the Executive Board, in which members will be contacted in the most direct form to meet.
    Section D: A simple majority of representatives must be present to conduct the business of SAAC. Each member will have one vote.
    Section E: Motions will be passed by a majority of the representatives present at the meeting. These articles may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the total membership of the SAAC and approval of the Director of Athletics.
    Section F: Voting at meetings will be informal and at the discretion of the advisor and/or president.
