LYNCHBURG, VA – Liberty took an early six point lead and never looked back as they defeated UVA Wise 80-35 Wednesday afternoon in Liberty Arena.
The win improves the Flames to 3-2 on the season, while the Highland Cavaliers remain at 3-1 as the game for them was an exhibition contest.
LU took a 6-0 lead before
Jalie Ruehling took a pass from
Caroline Mullins and hit a three-pointer with 8:15 remaining to cut the lead in half. The Flames then went on a 10-0 run and led 20-6 at the end of the quarter. They slowly added to the lead over the second period and led 38-17 at the half.
In the second half, Coach
Jamie Cluesman played mainly the freshman in order to get them more experience before South Atlantic Conference competition begins next week. Liberty also played a lot of their players and went on for the 80-35 win.
Kyndra West and
Shelby Higgins led the Cavs with eight points apiece.
Caroline Mullins had six rebounds, while
Izzy Proffitt had three assists.
Lynn Peters led the Flames with 17 points and ten rebounds, while Emma Leon had 15. Ify Nwaobi also had ten rebounds.
The Cavs will continue their streak of five games in eleven games as they travel to Young Harris on Saturday to face the Mountain Lions. Tip-off for that game will be at 1:00 p.m. They will then play another exhibition game against a Division I school as they travel to High Point for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Monday. They will then return home for the SAC opener against Wingate on Dec. 3, with the women's game beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the men's game.
