SOFTBALL GETS SAC SWEEP OF EMORY & HENRY

WISE – The Highland Cavalier softball team picked up the South Atlantic Conference season sweep over local rivals Emory & Henry Thursday afternoon at Cavalier Field.

The team rebounded from two losses earlier this week at Carson-Newman to claim the 11-6 and 9-1 (5 inning) wins to improve to 13-21 overall and 3-9 in SAC play.

GAME ONE:
- The Wasps picked up two runs in the first and three more in the third inning to take the 5-0 lead.
- UVA Wise's offense roared to life in the bottom of the third inning as they picked up six runs from six hits. Brie Frazier got things going with an RBI single that scored Abagail Mills. Next up was SAC hitting leader Kara Long, who had a 2 RBI hit up the middle. Later in the inning, Sara Barrett reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Frazier, and later scored herself on a throwing error.
- The Cavs plated two more runs in the fourth inning to make the lead 8-5.
- Emory & Henry would score a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to two, but UVA Wise added in two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and on more in the sixth to pull out to the 11-6 lead.
- Mallory McKnight led all players with three hits and two runs. Savannah Johnson and Adyson Gibson had two hits apiece, while five more Cavs had a hit each.
- Jillian Jones picked up the win as she entered the game in the top of the fourth inning and held the Wasps to only one run off of seven hits while striking out three batters.

GAME TWO:
- Just as in the first game, the Wasps took the lead in the top of the first before the Highland Cavalier offense took off. In this case they grabbed the five inning run-rule win while scoring in each inning.
- UVA Wise got on the board in the bottom of the inning when a Barrett hit scored Gibson to tie the game. The bases were then loaded, and Frazier and Long would both score on RBI walks.
- The Cavs would get two more runs in the second and third innings, with one of them coming from one of Gibson's two triples in the game.
- They would then add insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to claim the victory.
- Gibson had a gem of a game as she had four hits (including two triples), three runs, and a RBI. Barrett had three hits and a run while Frazier had two hits and two runs.
- Alivia Nolley went the distance in the circle, giving up only one hit and one run.

UP NEXT:
- UVA Wise will travel to Gaffney, South Carolina, to face Limestone in a SAC doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
