EMORY, VA – The UVA Wise women's basketball team grabbed the lead with an early run and the broke the game open in the second quarter as they went on to take the 80-66 South Atlantic Conference win over Emory & Henry Wednesday evening.
Four Cavs scored in double figures in the win, which moves the Cavs to 1-0 in the SAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Macie Ridge scored first to put the Cavs up 2-0, but E&H's Hannah Spainhour hit a three-pointer on the next possession to put the Wasps ahead 3-2.
Katlin Burger then scored the next four points to help give UVA Wise an 11-6 lead. The Wasps mounted a comeback late in the quarter and trailed UVA Wise 11-8 at the end of the period.
- Emory & Henry continued their run in the second quarter, tying the game at 11-11. Back to back baskets by
Sable Burnside and
Caroline Mullins helped spark a 14-1 UVA Wise run to give them the 25-12 lead with 5:10 left in the half. The Cavs would extend the lead to 14 points before the Wasps chipped away at it to trail 24-26 at the half.
- The teams effectively just traded baskets in the third quarter, with UVA Wise maintaining the 8-11 point margin.
- The Cavs slowly extended the lead to 74-56 via a driving layup by Ridge in the paint with 2:31 left. A Spainhour layup off a Cavalier turnover cut the lead to 76-64 with 1:09 remaining, but UVA Wise had free throws by Burger and
Alissa Cheek down the stretch to hold on for the 80-66 win.
- E&H was led by Hannah Spainhour's career-high 26 points and Breanna Yarber's 20 points. Gracyn Hall nearly had a double-double with eight points and twelve rebounds.

Katlin Burger led the Cavs with 21 points and nine rebounds, while
Sable Burnside had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Macie Ridge added in 12 points.
- A pair of freshmen had standout performances as
Alissa Cheek had 13 points and
Caroline Mullins also scored 12 points.
- For the game, UVA Wise hit 47.7% from the field while holding the Wasps to 35.6%. They also out-rebounded E&H 41-37.
- The win moves UVA Wise to 13-12 in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
UVA Wise returns home for the home SAC opener Saturday afternoon when Coker comes to town for a 2 p.m. tilt. The Cobras are 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC after defeating Wingate 63-57 earlier tonight.
