ROSS ECLIPSES 1,500 CAREER POINTS BUT CAVS FALL

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - - On a day when UVA Wise fifth-year Caitlyn Ross became just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 1,500 career points it was host Winston-Salem State that came out victorious 53-51 inside the Gaines Center Monday.

Winston-Salem State (6-9) snapped a six-game losing streak with the win by holding UVA Wise (6-8) to its second-worst shooting performance of the year at 30.4 percent.

The Rams got off to a fast start jumping out to a 6-3 advantage only to see the Cavaliers score the next seven points. The spurt by the Cavs was culminated by a Katlin Burger jumper off an Allyson Fleenor assist.

WSSU quickly responded with its own 7-0 run as Chloe Williams connected on two of her game-high three-made 3-pointers. The rest of the half would be played within a four-point window as neither school could gain a three-possession advantage.

Ross, who entered the game with 1,494 points, made history with 6:32 to play in the third quarter when her layup gave her 1,501 points for her career. The two points were part of nine on the day for the Kingston, Tenn. product who now has the second most points by any player in the NCAA Division II era of the program.

Later in the quarter, Ross would find fellow fifth-year Leah Kestner for a bucket inside to make it a 43-41 game with 2:40 left in the stanza. It would be the last points of the quarter for Jamie Cluesman's crew.

It would prove to be a missed opportunity for the Cavs as the Rams would turn it over three times over the final two minutes of the third quarter while scoring just two points over the final 3:40 of the period.

Despite the offensive issues, WSSU went to the final 10 minutes on top 43-39.

The Rams would lead by six points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, the last time coming on Williams' layup with 2:56 remaining that made it a 53-47 contest.

Sable Burnside would get UVA Wise back within a single possession as she made back-to-back baskets. The Cavs would have the ball with a chance to go on top with less than 100 seconds to play but, a 3-point attempt would go for naught.

The Rams rebounded the miss but would be unable to convert on their end of the floor, once more giving the visitors a chance to tie or take the lead.

UVA Wise would get a look at the basket but, the team's inability to find the bottom of the basket continued to be the story of the night. Once more, WSSU rebounded the miss and again the Rams would be unable to put the game out of reach with a bucket on its end.

The Cavs took over with 29 ticks showing on the clock and raced up the floor. UVA Wise would attempt a 3-pointer that would be unsuccessful and again WSSU corralled the miss.

Refusing to go down quietly, Kestner stole the ball on an inbound pass following a Rams' timeout. The play gave her team one final shot with 13 seconds remaining.

UVA Wise would be unable to get off a shot, allowing WSSU to prevail with its first win in the series.

Eight Cavs scored but Sarah Burton was the only player to reach double-figures with 10 points. UVA Wise dominated the glass, 41-to-34 behind 18 offensive rebounds. However, 22 turnovers and poor shooting proved to be too much to overcome.

Ross added six rebounds and eight assists to her nine points in defeat. Jakaiya Mack led all players with 13 points while Williams tossed in 11 for the winners.

Next up, the Cavs return to South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. from Lincoln Memorial University's Tex Turner Arena in Harrogate, Tenn.
