CAVALIERS FALL TO WOLVES

NEWBERRY, S.C. — UVA Wise were outscored 31-13 in the last thirteen minutes of the contest as Newberry took a 79-60 win over the Cavaliers in Eleazer Arena on Saturday, Feb. 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Two three-pointers from Calen Lightford and a three from Bradley Dean sparked Cavalier scoring in the first five minutes of play. Andrew Robinson of Newberry (14-8, 7-5 SAC) responded with two shots from the arc, but the Cavaliers (13-9, 6-7 SAC) pushed their way to a ten point lead by the 13:57 mark.

Although Newberry would threaten the Cavs with a run and get as close as two points behind, UVA Wise would hold their lead until halftime; 40-38.

After the break, a layup from Drake Downs and two shots from the charity stripe from Malik Joseph would give the Wolves their first lead since the first thirty seconds of the first half.

The Cavs fought back and forth with the Wolves for the next three minutes, but soon found trouble after the second media timeout of the half — as Quandaveon McCollum and Tj Brown combined for eight shots from the field. UVA Wise suffered eight turnovers in the second half and were outscored by eighteen points in the last ten minutes of the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Rron Ukaj led the Cavaliers with 14 points and six field goals. Dean added 12 points and went five-for-11 from the field, while Luke Lawson and Calen Lightford each added 10 points to the effort.

The Cavaliers shot a 38.6-percent from the field, the lowest percentage since their loss against then-ranked No. 6 Lincoln Memorial on January 1, 2023 (34.9-percent).

UP NEXT
the Cavaliers will look to bounce back and find revenge against Tusculum inside the Prior Center on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with a 7:30 PM tipoff.
