UVA WISE DROPS OT THRILLER TO LEE

WISE - - Lee used late-game heroics from Maggie Luzier and Brittney White to score a 12-11 women's lacrosse overtime victory against UVA Wise at Carl Smith Stadium Sunday. With the win, the Flames are 3-0 to start the year with all three victories coming against South Atlantic Conference.

Saturday's game featured two teams that entered the season unblemished at 2-0 and it played out as such as the two schools swapped the lead nine times.

Lee (3-0) provided the game's last lead change with 1:47 to play in overtime when Brittney White scored off a Hannah Vecsey pass to secure the victory.

UVA Wise (2-1) thought it had taken control of the game with a late surge in the third quarter as Logen Davis and Grace Golatt scored back-to-back goals in the final 90 seconds of the period to send Meghan Dennehy's team to the fourth quarter with an 11-10 advantage.

The Flames' defense would be the story of the remainder of the contest as the hosts did not register another shot on goal after Golatt's goal with 1:07 to play in the third period.

The Cavs defense was nearly equally as stout as goalie Oliva Toomer registered four of her 16 saves in the fourth quarter. However, Lee would get one final crack with under a minute to play in regulation.

After Kelsey McGowen forced a UVA Wise turnover, the Flames rushed downfield and tied the game with 23 seconds to play on a goal from Luzier.

In the first three minutes of overtime, neither squad had a shot on goal forcing yet another three-minute session.

White would win the opening draw control for Lee and later score the game-winning goal as UVA Wise joined Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne has fellow SAC schools the Flames have defeated in the early part of the year.

Davis continued her strong start to her collegiate career with four goals; it was the first collegiate hat trick for the freshman who also added an assist in the contest.

Golatt had two assists as part of a three-point day with Toomer tacking on five groundballs to her 16 save performance.

Turnovers proved costly for the Cavs as the team committed 27 in the contest. Lee turned it over just 16 times and enjoyed a 28-to-17 shot on goal advantage.

White and Luzier scored three goals each in the win with Luzier adding three assists to lead all players with six points and White posting a game-high seven draw controls.

Next up for UVA Wise is a home date with University of Montevallo. The Falcons will bring their 2-3 record to Smith Stadium Saturday in what is a scheduled 12 p.m. first draw.
