WISE — UVA Wise turned a five-point lead at the end of the first half to a 30-point lead at the final buzzer with the help of Zion Fruster and Bradley Dean down the stretch, finalizing a 112-82 win over the Virginia Lynchburg (VUL) Dragons on Saturday, Jan. 7.
The Cavaliers (8-6, 1-4 SAC) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of play led by a Luke Lawson three-pointer before the Dragons (1-12) found some buckets in the paint. A seven-point deficit quickly changed to a one point deficit with nine minutes to go in the first. A fast break jumper from Mark Fraizer of VUL at the 8:47 mark gave his squad the first lead of the day. Calen Lightford and Ben Bryson found their way to a bucket in response, and a back-and-forth affair to the halftime buzzer ended with a score of 45-40 with the Cavs ahead.
In the second, the Cavaliers took advantage of a low-energy Dragons squad, jumping to a fourteen-point lead with 16 minutes to go. After a solid offensive showing from UVA Wise for the next 13 minutes, a two-point shot from Kervens Yacinthe secured the Cavaliers' largest lead of the day — 36. Working until the final buzzer, UVA Wise charged their way to the 112-82 win.
Dean and Fruster each put up 20 points while Bryson added 13 points. Rron Ukaj recorded his first double-double of 11 rebounds and 12 points.
Up next, the Cavaliers jump back into conference play against Mars Hill on Jan. 11 with a 7:30 PM tipoff in Mars Hill, N.C.
