CAVS CLIP EAGLES' WINGS, SNAG FIRST-EVER WIN OVER CARSON-NEWMAN

WISE — A strong defensive effort from UVA Wise held Carson-Newman to 33-percent from the field and paced the Cavs to a 78-65 victory — avenging their loss from the Eagles earlier this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Right out the gate, Carson-Newman (11-9, 5-5 SAC) jumped to a 11-2 lead with the help of Ren Dyer and Caleb Bridgewater from three-point range. After a few runs from Bradley Dean in the paint, the Cavaliers (12-7, 5-5 SAC) had cut their margin to seven. The Cavaliers gradually found their groove and a three-pointer from Ben Bryson, and back-to-back buckets from Zion Fruster tied the ball game at 15.

With 7 minutes left in the half, each squad went possession-by-possession until the clock struck zero and the teams were evened up at 38 going into the locker room.

UVA Wise came out even stronger in the second. Despite a scoring spurt from Dyer in the first minute of second-half action, a three-ball from Dean gave the Cavs a 43-41 lead and they wouldn't trail for the rest of the contest.

The Cavs found their largest lead at the 6:57 mark when a Dean jumper hoisted their score to 64-50. UVA Wise finished out the Eagles by a 13-point, 78-65 victory.

The triumph marks the Cavaliers' first ever win against the Eagles out of 18 total meetings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • UVA Wise shot a 45.9-percent from the field and only a 36-percent from three-point range. The Eagles shot a 33.8-percent from the field and a 32.4-percent from the arc, and outrebounded the Cavaliers 40-31.
  • UVA Wise only suffered six turnovers, their lowest amount of turnovers since Nov. 15 against Pfieffer.
  • Carson-Newman suffered double the amount of turnovers in the defeat (12)

CAVS LEADERS:
Dean led the Cavaliers with 28 points, with an 11-from-18 performance from the field and three three-balls. Bryson and Fruster each put up 13 points. Patrick Shelley put up a team-high seven rebounds and added 10 points of his own in the victory.

CARSON-NEWMAN LEADERS:
Dyer led the Eagles with 21 points. Bridgewater trailed behind with 11 points while Bryant Thomas put up a game-high 11 rebounds.
