BLUEFIELD, W.VA. — The UVA Wise Cavaliers (8-3, 1-1 SAC) outscored the Bluefield State University Big Blues (0-7, 0-0 DII INDEPENDENT) 27-4 in their doubleheader on Friday, March 4.
GAME BY GAME
In the first game, UVA Wise hit the ground running with an early double from
Jenna McDermott down the left field line. Blues pitcher Madison Thompson couldn't hit her marks, and proceeded to walk two Cavaliers and allow a
Sarah Barrett 2-run single to give the Cavs an early 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers would hold off Bluefield State scoring until the bottom of the third, when Maurincia Demmings smacked an RBI single. A quick strikeout forced by
McKenna Falwell, a ground out, and a force out at third ended a Blues rally.
At the top of the fourth, Barrett led off with a double to left to motivate the Cavs. Within minutes, an error and a passed ball put two Cavaliers on the bases and set McDermott up to the plate. McDermott did what she does best — drilled a homer to right field; putting the Cavs up 5-1.
After a three-up, three-down half inning from the Cavs, a
Kaylee Jones single, a Falwell triple, and a Barrett homer would advance the Cavs to a 8-1 lead.
The Cavaliers would keep the Blues to only one run and only five hits for the remainder of the game.
The Cavaliers ended game one with two homers (McDermott: 1, Barrett: 1) and 10 hits.
In game two, the Cavaliers once again attacked in the first inning as Kylie Salazar produced five walks and allowed the Cavs to bring in a run.
The Blues bounced back after a tumultuous first half inning as Emma Crawford came up to bat and drilled a two-run homer to give Bluefield State the lead — their first and only lead they would grab on the day.
After retiring the side, UVA Wise's duo of Barrett and McDermott were able to grab a double each to tie the game up. A passed ball and an error allowed for Long to score and give the Cavs a one-run lead. Falwell added insult to injury as she hit a three-run bomb to give the Cavs a 6-2 lead in the top of the second.
Bluefield State stayed silent until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kylie Nelson hit a grounder to second base to score a Bluefield run.
The Cavs went on to snag 14 hits to end the game in a mercy-rule 19-2 victory.
UVA Wise hit six home runs in the night cap (Barrett: 2, Jones: 1, Falwell: 2, Barrett: 1).
