SOFTBALL KEEPS WINNING STREAK GOING WITH SWEEP AGAINST BLUEFIELD STATE

WISE, VA — Host UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers outscored the visiting Bluefield State Big Blues by a combined score of 26-2 on Wednesday, with a mercy-rule 15-0 win in game one and an 11-2 win in the second.

GAME BY GAME

The UVA Wise Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 SAC) began their scoring stride with a home run from two-hole sophomore Kara Long — the second home run of her career. Blues pitcher Kylie Salazar struggled in the circle, walking five Cavaliers and allowing six runs to cross the plate in the first inning. A Sarah Barrett walk with the bases loaded, two back-to-back sacrifice fly balls, and an RBI single by Barrett accounted for their monstrous scoring inning.

The rest of Cavalier runs came from the second and third inning, with a run snagged by McKenna Falwell from a past ball, a freshman Michaela Barney single RBI, and a double from Kaylee Jones to keep UVA Wise rounding the bases.

Junior McKenna Falwell and freshman Alivia Nolley never let Bluefield State (0-2, 0-0 DII Independent) come near the plate, striking out eight Blues combined in the five-inning clean up.

Second-baseman Sarah Barrett led at the plate with a walk, a single, and a double with four RBIs, while senior Kaylee Jones followed with an RBI double and a walk.

In game two, the Cavaliers started with a three-base knock from Jenna McDermott. McDermott reached home plate in the bottom of the first from a fielding error by Bluefield State's Kaylee Sarver at second base. A senior Sydney Collins double throttled the Cavaliers into gear on the bases, bringing in three.

In the circle, Collins would retire the next six Blues batters over the next two innings, while Kaylee Jones' second double of the day would bring two in to score in the bottom of the second.

In the third, a Barney two-run homer to right field put the lead at 8-0. Two back-to-back wild pitches from Bluefield's Madison Thompson would then score the remaining Cavaliers left of base, and strike out Alexis Miles to retire their side.

Another quick half-inning pitched by Collins in the top of the fourth brought the Cavaliers towards the bottom of the order. Abagail Mills' first at-bat of her Cavalier career resulted in a double to center field and she eventually came around home due to an error by Blues player Salazar.

Collins held the Blues scoreless until she walked in a run and set up a Kylie Nelson single to bring another run in. A miscue on the bases gave the Cavs a quick out to finish the game.

Collins took the win in the circle and was equally as helpful offensively, producing three RBIs and a triple.
