Catawba enters the final regular season game of the year in contention for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Ranked No. 6 in the latest Southeast Region Poll, the Indians have won five consecutive games, including Wednesday when the team won 79-67 over South Atlantic Conference leader Wingate. Five Indians average at least 9.2 points per game, led by Lyrik Thorne. Thorne is averaging 14.4 points per game while shooting 43.4 percent from the floor. Guard Shemya Stanback has also been an integral part of the offense as she averages 9.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Ranked No. 23 in the latest WBCA Coaches' Poll, Catawba can still get a share of the SAC Regular Season crown with a win over UVA Wise and a Wingate loss at Queens.
Having clinched a berth in the SAC Tournament, UVA Wise will take on Catawba in what could be the first of two consecutive meetings between the two schools. The Indians are in position to finish second in the SAC standings while a Cavalier loss Saturday most likely lands Jamie Cluesman's team seventh in the standings. Thus, the two squads would meet again next week in the opening round of the league tournament. Most recently, UVA Wise received 20 points from junior Nia Vanzant in a 67-58 win at Tusculum to lock up the postseason appearance; it was just the second win ever for the program at Tusculum. Saturday, UVA Wise will honor a trio of seniors in Meg Crawford, Kalee Johnson and Mackenzie King for their contributions to the program. Crawford has averaged two blocks per game over her career while scoring 332 points in just 38 contests, Johnson is 10th in school history in scoring at 1,354 points and King has tallied 493 points over 81 career games.
