Storylines – vs Lenoir-Rhyne
Lenoir-Rhyne visits UVA Wise in the annual Play4Kay Game Wednesday as the two programs join together to raise funding and awareness for cancer research. A pivotal contest for both programs as each school is in the thick of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament race thanks to improved play as of late. The Bears have won four of their last seven games, including a 69-61 win over nationally ranked Catawba. On the season, Lenoir-Rhyne has been the conference's best free throw shooting team at 76.7 percent while having committed the third fewest turnovers in the league (332). In a two-point loss to UVA Wise earlier this season, Brandi Hudson scored a game-high 27 points but the team was unable to overcome 36.6 percent shooting in suffering the defeat.
Having won consecutive games and four of its last five, UVA Wise will attempt to continue its march towards March with a win over Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday. A win would put the Cavaliers two full games ahead of the Bears in the league standings while also giving Jamie Cluesman's team the tiebreaker by virtue of a season-series sweep. As it stands, UVA Wise is in seventh place at 9-11 in the SAC while Lenoir-Rhyne is in ninth at 7-12 and just 1/2 game out of the final SAC Tournament berth. Last time out, the Cavs scored a season-high 93 points in a 93-74 win at Queens behind the play of freshman forward Katlin Burger. Burger scored a season-high 24 points while recording her first collegiate double-double as she added 10 rebounds in her first start in a UVA Wise uniform. Burger was one of four Cavs in double figures as she was joined by Nia Vanzant (17), Mackenzie King (14) and Kalee Johnson (13).
