CHARLOTTE, N.C. - - Freshman Katlin Burger recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career with 24 points and 10 rebounds as UVA Wise knocked off Queens University of Charlotte 93-74 inside Curry Arena Saturday.
WHERE IT BEGAN
UVA Wise started fast with an 11-to-2 scoring spurt to start the contest. During the run, Burger netted four points while Kalee Johnson added a 3-pointer, a steal and a rebound. It would be the start of a 23-point opening quarter by Jamie Cluesman's squad as the Cavs built a 23-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The Cavalier lead would swell to as many as 15 points in the first half as the visitors produced their highest scoring half of the season en route to a 51-38 lead at intermission.
PUTTING IT AWAY
An Amari Davis jumper would get Queens within single digits at 51-42 with nine minutes to go in the third quarter. It would be as close as the Royals could get. UVA Wise countered with a 16-to-2 scoring run to push the lead to 67-44 with 3:58 to play in the third quarter.
Burger scored eight points in the decisive run while Nia Vanzant added six more.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The 93 points scored by UVA Wise are the most by the team this season. A total of eight Cavs scored, including four in double figures. Vanzant (17), Mackenzie King (14) and Johnson (13) joined Burger in the double-figure scoring.
The Cavs won the rebounding battle 40-to-29, grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and made 14-of-18 free throws.
Queens' guard Kalaya Hall led all players with 35 points.
