CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Despite having three Cavaliers in double-digit scoring, the Queens University of Charlotte Royals dropped 19 three-pointers and shot 65.5-percent from the arc to take a 114-60 win in Curry Arena on Saturday, February 12.
Queens (22-3, 18-3 SAC) was taken off guard early with a Isaiah McAmis-forced turnover that turned into an early 2-0 Cavalier lead. Queens quickly responded with a shot from the arc to take a 3-2 lead — their first of 19 three-pointers they would drop in the game.
At the 14:37 mark, the Cavaliers (4-20, 3-17 SAC) had held their ground against No. 15-ranked Royals at a deadlock nine points on both sides. Tables turned when Kenny Dye, one of Queens' notorious 1,000-point players, dropped a three pointer to galvanize Royals momentum. The Royals then went on a seven-point unanswered run until Tyler Lloyd dropped in a layup to cut the lead. For the next 7 minutes, the Royals would outscore the Cavaliers 23-9, shooting 80-percent from three-point range.
As the Cavaliers headed into the break, they found themselves down 15 points.
As the second half started, Jamari Smith immediately dropped a jumper from the left wing, setting the tone for the rest of the half. Smith ended the night with 21 points, a game-high. Dye followed right behind with 17 points of his own, while McKee snagged 15 points, all being from the arc.
Joel Pettiford stuck it tough in the paint with 13 points and went 5 for 5 at the free-throw line, with Makai Vassell also putting up a team-high 13 points from four field-goals and five free-throws.
Up next, the Cavs will head back home on Wednesday, February 16 to play the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University, slated for tipoff at 7:30 PM.
