CHARLESTON TOO STRONG FOR UVA WISE

WISE - - No. 18 University of Charleston forced 23 UVA Wise turnovers while shooting 42.3 percent from the 3-point line to score a 79-56 non-conference women's basketball victory at the Prior Center on New Year's Eve.

Charleston (10-2) broke the game open in the second quarter. Tianni Kelly's club forced seven UVA Wise (8-4) turnovers in the period while shooting 61.5 percent from the floor as the visitors turned what was a two-point lead after the opening quarter into a 40-30 halftime edge.

The Golden Eagles never trailed in the game thanks in large part to the play of guard Dakota Reeves. Reeves made 6-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc as she tied teammate Trinity Palacio for game-high scoring honors with 18.

The Cavaliers were led by Caitlyn Ross who scored a team-best 14 points while handing out seven assists and recording a trio of steals. Josie Hester joined Ross in double figure scoring with 11 points; Leah Kestner and Katlin Burger tied for game-high rebounding honors with seven each.

The 23 UVA Wise turnovers resulted in 20 points for Charleston who also enjoyed a healthy margin from distance. The Golden Eagles connected on 11-of-24 3-point attempts with the Cavs making 4-of-12 attempts.

Next up, UVA Wise will return to South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday when Lincoln Memorial visits the Prior Center for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
