ABOUT UVA WISE:
Head Coach Blake Mellinger and the Cavaliers were not able to start 2022 on a new foot, falling to the Wingate Bulldogs by a score of 93-72. In the contest, the Bulldogs heavily utilized their talent from the bench, with 60 points scored by non-starters and only keeping UVA Wise to a singular team offensive rebound. Turnovers were a silent killer for the Cavaliers, as Wingate capitalized on 20 points from Cavalier lost possessions.
Joel Pettiford, 6-7 freshman forward from Greensboro, N.C. currently ranks fourth in the nation in Division-II in field goal percentage, accumulating a 69.1%. Pettiford also ranks as the leading freshman in all divisions in field goal percentage.
This is the second time the UVA Wise Cavaliers will face the Carson-Newman Eagles in the 2021-22 season — their first meetup resulted in a 21-point Eagle victory.
