WISE, VA - Wingate's 60 points off the bench, 20 points off of UVA Wise turnovers, and only one UVA Wise offensive rebound sadly sealed the deal for a Cavalier defeat on Sunday, with a final score of 93-72 as time expired.
Non-starter Andreas Wilson led the way for the Wingate Bulldogs (11-3, 6-3 SAC) with 24 points - with 20 points scored in the first half alone, hitting six three-pointers. Jarren Cottingham contributed right behind Wilson with 20 points of his own, hitting seven field goals and four shots from deep.Â
The UVA Wise Cavaliers (1-12, 0-8 SAC) scored first after the jump with a Joel Pettiford layup, but Cottingham of Wingate drove in two points and began a Bulldogs lead that lasted until the final buzzer.
The Bulldogs led by 22 points going into the break, holding the Cavs to 48.2s percent from the field, and 40 percent from downtown. From the field, Wingate put up their own 58 percent in the first 20 minutes of play.
Although the Cavaliers outshot the Bulldogs in all categories in the second half, their lead was too large for UVA Wise to overcome - with the Bulldogs snagging their largest lead of the night of 28 points at the 2:55 mark from a Sasha Letino layup. The Cavaliers went on an unanswered seven-point run with less than two minutes to go, but still fell to the Bulldogs by a 21-point margin.
Makai Vassell led the Cavaliers with 16 points and two blocks, and Kaeleb Carter trailed right behind with 14 points. Bradley Dean, Isaiah McAmis, Ben Bryson, and Carter all snagged three assists each, and Dean led the team with five rebounds.Â
