Storyline – vs. LENOIR-RHYNE

Everick Sullivan and the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears look for a positive start to their week and eye their third win in the conference after suffering a brutal loss against the nationally-ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters by a 31-point margin on Saturday, Jan. 8. The Bears' conference victories feature a 5-point win against the Wingate Bulldogs on Nov. 17, and a 3-point win against the Coker Cobras on Nov. 23. The Bears nearly snagged a win against he Catawba Indians on Dec. 11, but fell in overtime by a two-point margin. Lenoir-Rhyne currently finds themselves in a nine-game losing streak. 

Offensively, the Bears are shooting a 42.7-percent from the field, and a 31.3-percent from the arc. 

 

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Jalen Johnson: The redshirt-sophomore from Durham, N.C. averages 13.3 ppg and leads Lenoir-Rhyne in that category - put up season-high 34 points against non-conference opponent Young Harris on Nov. 13, 2021.

TJ Nesmith: The junior from Burlington, N.C. averages 3.4 rpg and leads his team in that category. Nesmith also ranks fourth on the conference leaderboard in field-goal percentage with a 64.1%.


ABOUT UVA WISE:

Head Coach Blake Mellinger and the Cavaliers took a tough loss to Carson-Newman on Jan. 5, as the Eagles galvanized a second-half run that resulted in a 19-point Cavalier deficit. The Cavaliers struggled mightily from the field, as they were only able to connect on 21 of 59 shots.The Cavaliers are still winless in the conference and hope to get their first conference win against the 2-9 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. 

In the conference leaderboards, Joel Pettiford sits in the No. 3 spot in field-goal percentage with a 65.4-percent. Prior to the Carson-Newman game, the freshman led the country in NCAA divisions with a 69.1-percent.
