WISE – UVA Wise softball picked up a doubleheader sweep of Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday afternoon at Cavalier Field. The Cavs secured a 14-1 run-rule game one win in five innings before earning a 5-2 game two victory.
UVA Wise (12-15-1, 7-9 SAC) used a 12-run bottom of the first to take an early lead over Queens (6-18, 2-15 SAC) in the first game. A Sarah Barrett lead-off double followed by a walk for freshman Jenna McDermott set up senior Kaylee Jones for a three-run homer to right center. Senior Alexis Miles' base hit and senior Katie Russell's double to right center put the Cavs in position to score. With one out, sophomore Megan Wilson's RBI single scored Miles as senior Casey Chambers sent a three-run shot to left field on the next at bat. Back at the top of the order, Barrett knocked a home run to left field, scoring senior Kailey Huffman. Russell scored again in the first on a two-out homer to left field, driving in Miles and Jones for a 12-0 lead into the second frame.
Neither team recorded another hit until the top of the fourth when Queens' Haley Hmiel hit a leadoff blast to right field to put the Royals on the board, 12-1.
UVA Wise responded in the home half of the fourth with another home run off the bat of Chambers as she scored Long to extend the Cavs advantage. A pop up, fly out, and ground out ended the game as UVA Wise prevailed in a 14-1 win.
The Cavs totaled 12 hits in the contest including four home runs. Senior Raychel Lapallo improved to 6-5 with the win as she yielded just two hits and struck out one across five innings.
Queens' Kate Hunter (0-2) suffered the loss as she scattered six hits and fanned one in 1/3 inning of work.
The Cavs struck first in the second game of the day with a lead-off home run off the bat of Barrett in the bottom of the third. Jones followed with a one-out bomb to left to push the Cavs lead to 2-0. UVA Wise sent one more run across on a Long RBI double to plate Russell.
Back-to-back RBI singles in the home half of the fourth extended the Cavs lead to 5-0 as Falwell and Chambers scored.
The Royals put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run to left field by Kayla Smith as she plated Chloe Palmer with Queens still trailing 5-2. Queens managed to get a runner on second in the top of the seventh with one-out, but nothing came of it as the Cavs held on for the sweep.
UVA Wise was error-free in the second game as the Cavs tallied nine hits. Sophomore McKenna Falwell (6-7) earned the win in the circle as she scattered five hits and fanned eight in a complete game effort.
The Royals Khristen McPherson fell to 0-2 on the season as she allowed four hits and struck out one in three innings of work.
Up next, softball will face Catawba College Saturday for Senior Day at Cavalier Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
