Softball Sweeps Newberry in Home Opener

WISE – Softball picked up a league doubleheader sweep of Newberry College Tuesday afternoon at Cavalier Field. UVA Wise secured game one 4-1 before taking game two 6-4 on a walk-off two-run homerun off the bat of senior Kaylee Jones.

The Cavs (6-8-1, 2-4 SAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one. Freshman Jenna McDermott recorded the first hit of the day as she singled before a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for UVA Wise. An Alexis Miles RBI double scored McDermott before Jones crossed home plate to put the Cavs in front early.

Newberry's (10-4, 3-3 SAC) Hill responded in the top half of the second with a blast to left center as the Wolves cut into the Cavs advantage, 2-1, heading into the bottom of the inning.

With two runners on base in the home half of the second, another hit by Miles gave the Cavs a 3-1 lead to end the frame. UVA Wise added another run in the next inning as freshman Sarah Barrett registered her first career home run on a shot to center field, aiding the Cavs to a 4-1 margin into the fourth.

The Wolves recorded a hit in three of the final four innings, but the Cavs held on for the 4-1 game one victory.

Miles led UVA Wise with two hits and added two RBI. Senior Raychel Lapallo (2-4) struck out five in the contest and scattered five hits in a complete game effort.

Newberry's Alyssa Ball fell to 2-1 on the season as she allowed two hits.

UVA Wise struck first in the second game of the day in the bottom of the third inning on a one-out homer to right center off the bat of senior Kailey Huffman to put the Cavs ahead 1-0.

Newberry answered with a home run by Haley Simonds to left center field in the top of the fourth to knot the game 1-1.

Falwell's three-run bomb up the middle in the bottom of the frame was the first home run of her career as she regained the lead for UVA Wise, 4-1.

Newberry scored three more runs across the top of the sixth and seventh inning to tie the contest once more, 4-4, into the bottom of the seventh.

Back-to-back groundouts followed by a walk put McDermott on base for UVA Wise as Jones hammered a home run to left center to give the Cavs a 6-4 win in game two.

UVA Wise totaled seven hits in the second game, highlighted by three home runs.

Jones finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Falwell went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run.

Falwell (3-3) picked up the win as she allowed three hits and struck out five across seven innings.

Newberry's Brittany Crowson (0-1) scattered two hits in the loss.

Softball will be back in action Thursday for a nonconference doubleheader against West Virginia State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Cavalier Field.
