WISE - - Sophomore Sydney Trask scored a game-high four goals while senior Jesse French continued her strong play with an eight-point performance as UVA Wise claimed its second consecutive running clock victory, 18-6 over Catawba at Smith Stadium Saturday.
UVA Wise (2-3, 2-1 SAC) did not trail for the second consecutive game. Five different Cavaliers scored as the hosts built an early 5-0 lead. During the spurt, Caroline Earnshaw, Trask and French all found the back of the net. Each woman finished the game with a hat trick as French and Trask netted three goals each.
Catawba (0-5, 0-4 SAC) never recovered from the slow start. The Indians committed 25 turnovers in the game, including 17 in the first half, as the visitors fell behind 9-3 at intermission.
After an Indians goal to start the second half, the Cavs rattled off six straight goals to command of the contest. During the decisive run, Katie Allen scored two of her three goals while Mallory Trimble, French and Trask also scored a goal.
UVA Wise played well on defense in the win. In addition to forcing 25 turnovers, Catawba was limited to just 13 shots on goal and 16 total shot attempts. The hosts scooped up 26 groundballs and limited the Indians to a 14-for-21 showing in clear attempts.
Overall, seven Cavs scored while the eight points by French are the most for the attacker since April 28, 2019 when she tallied nine points against Notre Dame College.
Catawba was led by Brooklyn Tilley who scored two of the team's six goals.
Next up, UVA Wise will visit Tusculum Wednesday as the Cavs will look to win their third consecutive league contest. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
