WISE - - No. 5 seed Anderson kept its hope alive of making a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament with a 65-49 win over No. 4 seed UVA Wise in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Pilot Flying J South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The Trojans blocked nine shots in the win and won the rebounding battle 65-to-49 as the visitors won their second game of the season over the Cavaliers.
Anderson (14-10) limited UVA Wise (15-5) to four second quarter points to break open what was a two-point contest. The strong defensive effort saw the Cavs make just 2-of-12 field goal attempts, including an 0-for-4 showing from the 3-point line. When the half concluded, the Trojans led 33-21.
While the offense turned up in the third quarter for Jamie Cluesman's crew, the defense did not. Anderson outscored UVA Wise 19-to-17 in the third quarter as Maggie Campbell drilled a pair of 3-pointers in the 10-minute session. The Trojans tallied six second chance points in the third quarter as the team corralled four offensive rebounds.
At no point in the fourth quarter would the lead get below 14 points. Ada Stanley would cut it to 14 points with 3:10 to play on a bucket inside, it would be the last points of the day for UVA Wise.
Kalee Johnson recorded the 1,000th point of her career in defeat. The forward finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She is the 22nd player in program history to reach the mark.
Caitlyn Ross tallied 15 points and dished out eight assists as the sophomore reached 300 assists in her career.
No other Cav reached double figures as UVA Wise was limited to 29.1 percent shooting for the game while going 0-for-5 from the 3-point line in the final 20 minutes.
Samantha Michel netted 12 in the win while Britney Bailey scored nine points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked five shots. Taylor Hair (11 points) and J'Mya Cutler (10) also had big nights for Anderson.
With the win, the Trojans advance to Thursday's semifinal round where they will face Lincoln Memorial at home. The Railsplitters upset top seeded Carson-Newman on Monday.
