Briggs Parris Nets 1,000th Career Point; Cavalier Men Drop Road Test at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – Redshirt junior Briggs Parris collected his 1,000th career point Saturday afternoon as the Cavaliers were edged by Anderson, 88-80, on the road. Parris becomes the 38th men's basketball player to accomplish the feat since UVA Wise became a four-year institution. Junior Cameron Whiteside posted a game-high 29 points and added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

The Trojans (3-5, 3-5 SAC) claimed a 12-point lead around the two-minute mark in the second half, but an 8-2 run by UVA Wise (2-11, 2-11 SAC) cut the margin in half with 39 seconds to play as the Cavs trailed by six, 82-76. UVA Wise was unable to complete the rally as Whiteside ended the contest knocking down a pair of free throws at the line as Anderson held on for the six-point win.

The two teams traded shots from downtown to open the scoring but a 13-2 spurt for the Cavs extended the margin as UVA Wise pulled ahead 16-5 with 14:48 on the clock. The Trojans responded with 11 unanswered points later in the half, tying the game at 24 apiece with 7:53 left in the frame.

Anderson stayed on the heels of UVA Wise as the Trojans regained their advantage with less than a minute to play on a three by Kai River. Back-to-back buckets for the Trojans closed out the frame as the Cavs trailed by five, 45-40, at the half.

Parris led all scorers at the break with 17 early points. UVA Wise shot 50 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from three in the first half. The Trojans' finished the half outscoring UVA Wise in the paint 22-12 and were aided by 23 bench points.

Sophomore Drew Greene and Whiteside combined to score the Cavs first 10 points of the second half as UVA Wise climbed back from behind to tie the game at the 16:48 mark, 50-50. Anderson used another run over the next three minutes to take its first double-digit lead of the second half, 61-51, with 13:47 left.

UVA Wise cut the margin back to single-digits later in the frame, down 76-68 with 3:20 to play as Whiteside converted after forcing an Anderson turnover. Parris managed to get his shot to fall in the paint with less than 15 seconds to play as UVA Wise continued to claw at Anderson's lead, but it would not be enough as the Trojans were able to hold off the Cavs.

The Cavs tallied nine points off turnovers in the second half and 16 points in the paint. UVA Wise shot 41.4 percent from the field in the final frame. The Cavs struggled from three-point range, connecting on just 4-of-16 (25 percent) and shot 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from the foul line in the closing half. Anderson knocked down just one shot (1-for-9) from three and shot 46.7 percent from the floor in the frame.

Parris totaled 22 points in the contest for the Cavs as Greene added 10 points in the loss. On the night, UVA Wise shot 45.6 percent from the floor and 73.1 percent from the charity stripe. Anderson had five players score in double-figures led by Kai Rivers 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will return to action Monday for a league contest against Mars Hill University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
